SUEZ speeds up its development in greater china with the contract to upgrade the San Wai sewage treatment plant in Hong Kong
In partnership with ATAL1 and China Harbour2, SUEZ won the contract to design and build the extension of the San Wai Sewage Treatment Plant in Hong Kong and operate the plant for 10 years, with a possibility of a five-year extension. The 15-year contract is worth a total of €353 million (HK$3,142 million), of which SUEZ’s share is approximately €99 million (HK$880 million). This contract strengthens SUEZ’s presence in Hong Kong where it has been providing, for almost 30 years, innovative and tangible water and waste management solutions in a circular economy approach.
The contract, awarded by the Drainage Services Department of Hong Kong, will enhance the wastewater treatment capacity of the existing plant – located in the Northwest New Territories – to meet the needs of a growing population and increased urban development in the Yuen Long area. It will also improve the wastewater treatment performance through the addition of chemically-enhanced pre-treatment with Densadeg®, a renowned degremont® technology3, followed by ultraviolet disinfection.
Construction is expected to be completed by the end of 2020, at which time the San Wai Sewage Treatment Plant will have a maximum peak capacity close to 500,000 cubic metres per day, compared to its current daily capacity of 164,000 cubic metres.

The contract to upgrade the San Wai Plant, follows the one, awarded in 2010, to build and operate the Pillar Point Sewage Treatment Plant (550 000 m3/day), currently in operation. SUEZ is the leader of waste management in Hong Kong where it is currently responsible for treating 70% of the waste of Hong Kong’s 7.3 million residents – operating six out of seven transfer stations, and 2 of the biggest and most modern landfills in the world that treat almost 3.8 million tons of waste per year.
